Local festivals or Ferias
The Spanish know how to party and each city, town and village have several annual celebrations spread through the year. There is often free entertainment as well as free food. These events are all family friendly and great ways to spend a day or two. The main dates for Cómpeta are as follows;
- Feria de Verano ( July ). Each village has its own summer fair however this being Spain each one lasts for nearly a week and starts each day at 8am with fireworks and ends after 4am each night! There is a fair in the center of the village which is packed with families late into the night. The streets are lined with stalls and curro stands and there are free bands on each night. The best bit is the giant free foam party which takes place in one of the town’s main square. 6 feet of foam fills the square and everyone jumps in and dances! If you miss the date of the Cómpeta fair don’t worry; in the weeks surrounding the Cómpeta fair it moves round the surrounding villages so you won’t miss out.
- Noche de Vino ( 15th august every year ). This is unique to Competa and celebrates the grape harvest. It starts at 2pm in Plaza Vendimia with a symbolic grape crushing and music and dance from the villages traditional folk group. The festival restarts at about 10pm in Plaza Almijara where there is authentic flamenco singing and dancing late into the night. The square is packed and it is a truly special night.
- Semana Santa (Easter ). This is a Catholic country and Easter week is filled with traditional processions, masses and events. It is a very special time of year and well worth experiencing for yourself.
Coast & Beaches
Half an hour drive from Competa and you are on the coast. East or West the coast is accessible and there are a range of different beaches for you to choose from. Adventure down a track onto one of the hidden coves near La Herradura, sit on the sand in front one of the beachside Chiringuitos or head for a beach in the center of a busy resort like Torre Del Mar, Almuñécar or Nerja. Nerja is only 35 minutes away by car. It was once a sleepy fishing village but now it is a large but classy resort with the wonderful Balcon de Europa at its center. There are several discrete beaches along the Nerja sea front all backed by a host of bars and restaurants. Nerja has every type of cuisine and it has about 10 superb restaurants for special occasions. Link: www.nerja.es
